Tuesday night after Wheeling City Council voted to pass the Dangerous Dog Ordinance.
More than 20 residents spoke before council to let them know why they were against the ordinance,
which now requires owners of so-called "vicious dogs" to register them with the city.
"Legislation that specifically says a breed is bad simply cannot fly in the face of reality," says Dr. James Radcliffe, owner of Town and Country Animal Hospital in Wheeling.
"Pit bulls are not inherently bad, there are a lot of wonderful, loving, excellent, caring pit bulls out there in the world."
Councilman Barry Crow was also a big supporter of the ordinance, saying it was put in place for the safety of the community.
He says even though it passed, it's not carved in stone, and if it doesn't work for the citizens, council can vote to amend it.
The Dangerous Dog Ordinance is set to go into effect April 1st.

Agenda can be seen here

If you havent done so, please write informative and educational letters of opposition to this
This can be passed on the 17th.
A better option will be to call the mayors office and voice opposition.
This is not a well thought out proposal,
it is clearly a personal agenda of Councilman Crows and based on a dog (never confirmed as pit bull) killing a rabbit?
He is stating that he is getting more calls for the ban than against it...
so we need to let the Mayor and other Council members see that this is not true,
by contacting them, POLITELY!!!
Calling and fax will be recorded and taken to meeting,
AND THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN MONDAY SINCE THE MEETING IS TUESDAY...THIS CAN PASS ON SECOND READING!!!
Emails can easily be deleted with no formal record.
Give them alternatives to this...things that the city can do to enhance and make what is already on the books work.
City Council is scheduled to conduct the second and final reading of the ordinance during its Jan. 17 meeting.
