Arkadelphia city directors discussed banning pit bull dogs from the city during their regular meeting Thursday night (3-2-06).
Director James Calhoun said two dog-bite incidents have occurred within the last week.
He however did NOT mention one incident was between two DOGS until AFTER the meeting!
Calhoun also presented a copy of an article from City and Town magazine about North Little Rock's ban on pit bulls and asked directors to read it.
The article was written by the director of the North Little Rock Animal Shelter, Billy Grace, who stated,
"I have never known of any ordinance to have such a positive impact upon a city. I now regret that we did not do something sooner."
While voicing his desire to ban vicious dogs, Calhoun also recognized the need for caution. "We need to move slowly" before taking action, Calhoun said.
Vice Mayor Ann Sanders agreed. Although she acknowledged that there are some dangerous animals in town, she cautioned the board to wait until more information can be obtained about the facts of the two incidents involving the dogs.
"We've heard about the dogs. But we need to know the circumstances," she said.
A VOICE OF REASON!!!
The city has leash laws and the owner of the dog who bit the child has been cited for violating that ordinance, according to the police report.
The owner also voluntarily surrendered the dog to the animal control officer and has agreed to euthanize the dog after the mandatory waiting period.
"The owner is having the dog put down,"Sanders said. "She doesn't have to do that, but it's the right thing to do."
