ROTT N CHATTER, June 1995, Volume 3 Number 11 (See Graphic Rott at Heel) T R A T I I (graphic here) N P I N G My name is Lynne Hartman and I've been loved by Rotties and Labs for 15yrs. Two of my Rotties have been rescue dogs of about 2yrs when they came into my heart. I want to bring to everyones attention the best way (in my opinion) to teach a puppy or older dog to sit, without putting undo pressure on the hips or their back. This method has become popular in the last five yrs or so when motivational methods became popular. Take a piece of food and show it to the pup at eye level and bring the food straight up a couple of inches and the pups head will follow the food up and the rear end will go down. As you see rear end sitting say sit and PRAISE give food and release, this is also the same way to teach the older dog to sit. Also get on the dogs level SIT ON THE FLOOR. I decided to write this little article because I get tired of watching people pushing down on the dogs rear or the small of their back (as I call it) in the attempt to get the dog to sit, and I believe this can cause problems in the future, in the back or hips latter in life. So if you see someone pushing on their dogs please mention this to them. A very good puppy tape to watch is Anne Marie Silvertons Puppy Training tape, this tape can also be used to teach older dogs also.
