FERTILIZER ALERT!!!! With summer fast approaching in most areas...finally... many are going to plan on working in their yards and that often means using various froms of fertilizers on lawns and gardens . This alert is on the heels of a phone I received about a healthy/active 2 1/2 OES that died last night 12 hours after her owners used ‘steer manure’ on their lawns. At 6 pm the family finished fertilizing their lawns with a low- cost bag of steer-manure purchased from Home Depot (an all around general store/warehouse chain). They then left for a pleasant dinner out. When they returned at 7pm they found their beloved pet, staggering and drooling (classic poisoning symptoms). The dog was rushed to the Veterinarian's office where she died at 3 am the following morning. The stomach contents included some of the steer-manure. The Veterinarian indicated that the toxic level of the dog at the time of death was 177 and normal is is in the range of 0-98. This steer-manure has no warning label on it indicating toxicity due to the ammonia nitrate content... however there apparently is a statement on the bag indicating that the company manufactoring it assumes NO PRODUCT LIABILTY. PLEASE FOLKS be alerted to this fact and be ever so on guard to ANY commercial products you use in and around your home . . . DO NOT assume that because there is NO WARNING LABEL that the product would be safe for/around our beloved Rottweilers. It has been an unproven theory of mine for some time that a lot of these very same products are often the cause of setting off some of the immune-defiency disorders that we are all too often seeing in our Rottweiler breed, along with stress and other factors such as over vaccinating as well. I know of too many Rott N Kids that developed vitiligo, foot fungi, etc after gardening activities that included using fertilizers, both steer-manure and chemical. Don't forget about other summer dangers that may lurk...treated 'deck' wood used in patios, snail/slug baits, paint...etc.
