ROTT N CHATTER, February 1993, Volume 1 Number 7 TRAINING TIP OF THE MONTH The training tip for this month is a simple one. When you bring that new puppy home you can begin training it from the first day to COME to you whenever you call it. Only you can make the puppy WANT to respond to your call. One easy way to accomplish this is to ALWAYS carry treats in your pocket or your hand whenever you call your puppy. The object is to condition your puppy so whenever it hears your voice it means something so GREAT it just can't wait to get to you. Later you can taper off on the treats but always reward occasionally. Actually all of the dogs at our house stop whatever they are doing the instance they hear my voice. Our oldest is ten and they never know when I might just have a SUPER tasty tidbit waiting for them. I often use their own kibble freely as a reward for them, that way their diet has not been disturbed and they love it as well as any other treat. In fact I keep a bowl readily available on the kitchen sink so I can offer tidbits throughout the day for good deeds done. NOTE: NEVER SCOLD OR PUNISH A DOG FOR ANY REASON WHEN IT COMES TO YOU!!!
