ROTT N CHATTER, January 1993, Volume 1 Number 6 ANTI-FREEZE WARNING Hundreds of dogs are poisoned each year by Ethylene Glycol, the main ingredient in antifreeze. Unfortunately antifreeze has an appealing taste to dogs and children too. Antifreeze has a very pleasant, warm sweet taste. The first sign after ingesting antifreeze is wobbling, weakness in the hindquarters, depression and sleep, sometimes vomiting. Depending on the amount drunk some dogs may experience muscle twitching and seizures, or become comatose. After 12 hours, however, many dogs appear to recover. For the next day or so, the dog may seem almost normal. Then the kidneys may fail and the dog will usually die within a few days. Once the kidneys have failed, there is no effective treatment. Be careful when draining antifreeze from the radiator and routinely check the radiator for leaks.
