ROTT N CHATTER, September 1992, Volume 1 Number 2 TRAINING TIP OF THE MONTH Do you have a Rottweiler that sits crooked on a recall and is somewhat slow in getting there? Well, Patricia Fisher has learned an excellent tip from Sandra Scott and Max Harris that certainly works for her Tasha. Tasha had been force trained with a choke collar and a pinch collar. Sandy suggested to Patty that food training would be ideal to retrain Tasha to eliminate her bad habits. Patty writes: "Her idea is to use a wire attached to your waist and affix a piece of food to the wire. The beauty of this is that it allows you to keep your hands at your sides as required in obedience competition, yet still reward the dog for a good 'front'. It also eliminates crooked sits on the recall and definitely gets the dog animated. Be sure that the wire is smoothed down where the food is attached. Using the dog's regular meal as the food source is most effective when possible. I was astounded with the difference in Tasha's over all attitude with this training method. She now truly loves to work instead of trying to do her own version of obedience." (Editor's note: John and Patty Fisher along with Tasha and Jack felt Hurricane Andrew during its full fury in Homestead, Florida, however, much to joy of family and friends, they came through safely though their home was all but totally destroyed.)
