ROTT N CHATTER, August 1992, Volume 1 Number 1 TRAINING TIP OF THE MONTH When obedience training, does your favorite black and tan companion just sit and gaze boringly at everything but you? Well, there may be hope yet. Susan Jenulis of Garden Grove found her answer, she spits at her two Rotties. Yep, that's right. Susan pops dog kibble in her mouth and with her hands at her side she will spit a single treat. Well, what self- respecting Rottie will turn down a morsel of food? Using his favorite treat, it won't take long before you have your Rottweiler's eager attention. Make sure that you reward your kid with a spat treat after he has watched you intently for a few seconds. You can then begin lengthening his attention span and spit periodically. Now for the good part. Susan's Lucy was a Rescue Rottweiler and the first dog that she worked in obedience. But, before Lucy could compete, Susan had to acquire an ILP number from AKC (for purebred dogs that are not registered.) With not even a practice Match under their belts, Susan and Lucy entered the Golden State Rottweiler Club Specialty Show and Trial in 1991. From the Novice A class, they earned the most prestigious obedience honors available, that of being the HIGHEST SCORING DOG in the SPECIALTY TRIAL. (ED. Does that tell the rest of us something?) By the way, Marci is following in Lucy's footsteps along with competing in confirmation.
